چکیده

Historically, conventional radiological imaging has had an important role in the diagnosis and imaging of acquired and congenital cardiovascular disease with modalities including chest radiography and fluoroscopy, and progressing to coronary catheterised angiography, echocardiography and nuclear medicine. Rapid technological advances and new clinical applications, coupled with an increase in therapeutic options for cardiovascular disease have resulted in a recent explosion in cardiovascular imaging. There is little doubt that multi-detector cardiac computed tomography (MDCT) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the hottest topics in cardiovascular imaging today. Although the number of 64-slice scanners and cardiac-enabled MRI units in clinical use is still relatively low, momentum is gathering fast as their versatility and striking capabilities become more apparent.

Cardiac imaging: does radiation matter?

The use of ionizing radiation in cardiovascular imaging has generated considerable discussion. Radiation should not be considered in isolation, but rather in the context of a careful examination of the benefits, risks, and costs of cardiovascular imaging. Such consideration requires an understanding of some fundamental aspects of the biology, physics, epidemiology, and terminology germane to ra...

Physicians’ awareness in Yazd province about Biological Effects of ionizing radiation applied in radiological imaging procedures

Introduction: Ionizing radiation has long-term risks, especially cancer. Since physicians request radiological examinations for patients, they need to be aware of its benefit and also risks. The aim of this study was to assess the overall knowledge of physicians in Yazd province about the radiation risks associated with diagnostic imaging procedures. Material and Methods: In this descriptive ...

The appropriate and justified use of medical radiation in cardiovascular imaging: a position document of the ESC Associations of Cardiovascular Imaging, Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions and Electrophysiology.

The benefits of cardiac imaging are immense, and modern medicine requires the extensive and versatile use of a variety of cardiac imaging techniques. Cardiologists are responsible for a large part of the radiation exposures every person gets per year from all medical sources. Therefore, they have a particular responsibility to avoid unjustified and non-optimized use of radiation, but sometimes ...

Radiological informed consent in cardiovascular imaging: towards the medico-legal perfect storm?

Use of radiation for medical examinations and tests is the largest manmade source of radiation exposure. No one can doubt the immense clinical and scientific benefits of imaging to the modern practice of medicine. Every radiological and nuclear medicine examination confers a definite (albeit low) long-term risk of cancer, but patients undergoing such examinations often receive no or inaccurate ...

Determination of normal ranges of regional and global phase parameters using gated myocardial perfusion imaging with Cedars-Sinai’s QGS software

Introduction: Myocardial perfusion imaging using gated SPECT and phase analysis is an effective tool in evaluation of mechanical dyssynchrony. The purpose of this study was to determine the normal ranges of global and regional phase parameters. Methods: A total of 100 patients with normal resting and stress electrocardiograms, low pretest likelihood for c...
